I have (horribly) hacked Share-This so that it uses a neater URL for displaying the Share-This page (/share) after the permalink. My code is based on Lester Chan’s WP-Print. Feel free to tidy it up if you’re that way inclined.

It can be downloaded at here.

    Hi folks,

For those interested in running Share This without the 55K of prototype.js overhead…

I’ve posted instructions over at the WordPress forum (http://wordpress.org[...]#post-560040) on how to modify the excellent Share This plugin to remove the 55K of overhead from prototype. I suggested in the post that perhaps Alex could consider making this a user-configurable option, so users can choose whether to load the library without having to modify the code…just a thought!

    All the best,
    Greg

Slashdot Linux Story | Slackware 13.0 Released

I loved Slackware for many years, from 1995 to 2008, when I had 4 Slack machines in the house. However, it was the upgrading itself that finally turned me. I found it nigh impossible to actually "upgrade" a pre-existing configured system in use without critically damaging libraries and needing to reinstall from scratch, and worse, reconfigure and fiddle for about 10 hours to get everything working again the way I liked it. In my 20s I had that kind of energy and enthusiasm. Not any longer.

Yes, I have switched to Ubuntu/Mythbuntu, but have brought all my Slackware knowledge with me. Debian package management is divine. The switch has turned out to be the best of both worlds, Ubuntu's polish with my Slackware config skills, with the result of a brilliantly tuned machine that's nigh hassle free.

wow slackware 13, sw was the first distro i ever used. way before rpms and package management u had to be hardcore and compile everything. kernel rebuilds took hours on a i386 64MB ram :) ah, the good ol days.

Slashdot Linux Story | Microsoft Acknowledges Linux Threat To Windows

The real kicker is what can the company try and coax/cajole/force other companies / people to do based on their desire/want/need to get their product.

In the case of M$ Winbloze, they had the gall (and it worked) to demand that computer manufacturers buy 1 license of their product for every computer they sold, regardless of the O.S. it was distributed with.

they finally get it?

Apache: [warn] _default_ VirtualHost overlap on port 80, the first has precedence Error and Solution

Question:I'm using Apache 2 to host multiple site on a single host using Apache name based VirtualHost feature. However, Apache is displaying lots of warning as follows:

Performing sanity check on apache22 configuration:
[Portal Oct 05 06:59:34 2008] [warn] _default_ VirtualHost overlap on port 80, the first has precedence

[Portal Oct 05 06:59:36 2008] [warn] NameVirtualHost 81.aaa.www.yyy:80 has no VirtualHosts

How do I fix this warning and host multiple websites under UNIX / Linux Apache 2 webserver?

Answer: The NameVirtualHost directive is a required to configure name-based virtual hosts. Add this to your httpd.conf file to fix this issue. Open httpd.conf file:
# vi httpd.conf
Add NameVirtualHost as follows:
NameVirtualHost *:80
OR add server IP
NameVirtualHost 202.54.1.1:80
Save and close the file. Restart httpd web server under RHEL / Red Hat / Fedora / CentOS Linux:
# service httpd restart
OR type the following to restart Apache 2 under Debian / Ubuntu Linux:
# /etc/init.d/apache2 restart

Sample Apache 2 Virtual hosting configuration

If you want to maintain multiple domains/hostnames on your machine you can setup VirtualHost containers for them. Most configurations use only name-based virtual hosts so the server doesn't need to worry about IP addresses. This is indicated by the asterisks in the directives below.

# My Virtual Hosts Config File for Two Domains
NameVirtualHost *:80

<VirtualHost *:80>
    ServerAdmin webmaster@theos.in
    DocumentRoot "/usr/local/docs/theos.in"
    ServerName www.theos.in
    ServerAlias theos.in
    ErrorLog "/var/log/theos.in-error_log"
    CustomLog "/var/log/theos.in-access_log" common
</VirtualHost>

<VirtualHost *:80>
    ServerAdmin webmaster@nixcraft.com
    DocumentRoot "/usr/local/docs/nixcraft.com"
    ServerName www.nixcraft.com
    ServerAlias nixcraft.com
    ErrorLog "/var/log/nixcraft.com-error_log"
    CustomLog "/var/log/nixcraft.com-access_log" common
</VirtualHost>

Integrate posterous on your wordpress self hosted blog

I'm all about posting by email!, Its sweet from my BlackBerry. I also want to host my blog on my own server.

How do we do this? Simple - posterous "autopost" integration. We assume your blog is already setup with wordpress. If not. go do that now ;)

1) Register at posterous.com

2) Add an autopost service - wordpress - http://posterous.com/autopost

3) Enter your credentials.

4) It will most likley FAIL - heres what to do

b) Edit your xmlrpc.php - remove this line:

  1. </div>
  2. <div>
  3. <div>
  4. <div>      <api name="Atom" blogID="" preferred="false" apiLink="<?php echo apply_filters('atom_service_url', site_url('wp-app.php/service') ) ?>" /></div>
  5. <div>

http://forums.posterous.com/autoposting-to-newer-builds-of

c) Enable your blog to use XML-RPC - To do this, log in as admin, go to Settings, then Writing. Click the box

Now you can simply email or blog from posterous.com and your posts will show up on your self-hosted blog & on <blog>.posterous.com

just like this one :)

Slashdot Ask Slashdot Story | Linux-Friendly, Internet-Enabled HDTVs?

I bought a new HDTV, so let me share some of my experiences and things to look out for:

1) DLNA. This is *supposed* to be a standard built on top of uPnP, allowing a TV to access a media server on the local network. It sounds good in theory: let your MythTV box stream directly to your TV. In practice, it is not worth very much: the set of video formats that a DLNA TV supports is VERY MUCH smaller than the set of formats you see in practice on your media files. In fact, my Samsung TV cannot even play back content streamed over the network that it can play if that same file is placed on a USB flash drive and plugged directly into the TV. My advice is don't plan on using DLNA, plan on hooking up a real computer.

2) HDMI inputs. Again, my TV has 4 inputs - 3 more than I need. The TV will NOT take the digital audio from an HDMI source - for example, Blu-Ray audio from my PS3 - and pass that audio unmolested through to the optical output connecting the TV to the amplifier. As a result, all I would get from any game or from most Blu-Ray disks was the left and right channels passed on to the stereo - no sub, no surround, no center channel. And the TV does NOT have a six channel audio output - only 2. So I end up having to do all the switching at the stereo, and then pass everything on to the TV - so I really only need one HDMI input.

3) HDMI-CEC. In theory, this allows the TV's remote to control other things, like a Blu-Ray player or a stereo, by passing the command data down the HDMI cable. The PS3 does not support this, nor does my lower-end (but brand new) Sony stereo. Maybe if you buy all of your gear from the same manufacturer, and you buy higher end gear this works, but beware. Plan on either having many remotes, or buying a smart remote and training it (and because the PS3 uses Bluetooth rather than IR, plan on your universal remote not controlling the PS3).

4) Internet through your TV. Two words:
Flash
Javascript.
Your TV will likely not support EITHER of them very well. Again, plan on an external computer. And DON'T plan on using a wireless mouse or keyboard - those things are so range-crippled now that unless you are within a couple of feet of the receiver (and I mean that literally: less than 4 feet!) they won't work (and that's not some no-name keyboard: that's a Logitech).

5) Linux. Yes, my Samsung runs Linux. It is cool to see the GPL in the manual. Other than that - it really matters not at all. The TV application itself is NOT FLOSS, nor is the Linux any kind of a standard distribution: You aren't going to do a "apt-get install $FOO" here. The system doesn't implement any of the "standard" things you might want, like SSH or X. It doesn't even support any file system on external devices other than VFAT (so no larger-than-4G files using EXT2).

All in all, my advice is: treat the TV as a monitor - it's job it to show pixels. Don't expect the TV to make sound - you'll have an external amp or receiver for that. Don't expect the TV to surf the web - you'll want a real computer with a real operating environment for that. Don't expect the TV to play media files - again, you'll want a real computer for that.

Cut those features from the TV, and spend the money you save putting together a media PC as a companion for the TV.

Slashdot Linux Story | Red Hat Releases Windows Virtualization Code

The problem for me with this is that Windows is a poor server OS. The only compelling reason to run Windows servers is active directory and exchange. IIS is not nearly as good as apache or nginx or comanche or lighttpd (specifically, overhead, flexability, security, and performance!)

The costs for many organizations to engineer, deploy, and support windows servers for exchange and sharepoint is equal to or greater that the cost of outsourced/hosted. You can get hosted exchange for under $12/user/month at rackspace which compares well enough to a MCTS for Windows server and exchange as that 55,000 can do well over 350 exchange accounts without a power bill.

A linux server may take some expertise to setup but needs far far less daily upkeep. You can employ many less techs and hire in from the local tech shop for big deployments. I have an email server (ubuntu 6.04) that has been running for over 3 years without any effort on my part. The only downtime it has ever had was when the power failed and it shut down after the UPS was drained. $1200+ about 6 hours config (say $85/h) and no maintenance is something is am sure no windows server can or ever has matched.

back on point here, stop investing time and money is getting windows to run faster virtualized, put those dollars into alternatives to windows software. it has happened before that an OSS alternative (apache) has become so dominant that the big vendors have the alternatives rather than the standard. (bind, apache, sendmail and postfix, courier etc)

windows virtualization code on linux = FAIL
